Dr. Joseph's Background

Dr. Joseph is a world renowned neuropsychologist, neuroscientist, and expert on the brain, mind, and emotion who has published dozens of major scientific studies and 2 best selling neuroscience textbooks.

Dr. Joseph obtained his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology and Clinical Neuropsychology, from UHS/The Chicago Medical School, and completed his training and internship at the Yale University Medical School/VAMC, Department of Neurology, Clinical Neuropsychology Section.

Dr. Joseph's first scientific monograph, The Neuropsychology of Development and the Origin of Thought, was featured on the cover of the Journal of Clinical Psychology in 1982 and generated world wide attention. It was translated and published by foreign scientific journals and reprinted by innumerable universities and medical schools including Harvard University Medical School.

Dr. Joseph pioneered research on early environmental and hormonal influences on the brain, mind, and emotional behavior, and demonstrated conclusively, in the 1970s and early 1980s, the profound effects of the environment and/or hormonal influences on emotion, learning, memory, intelligence, perception, arousal, attention, sex differences, and the developing brain.

By the close of the 1970s Dr. Joseph had demonstrated conclusively that enriched rearing conditions significantly improve learning, memory, and intellectual functioning; and that sex differences in learning, are maintained regardless of rearing experiences and are neurologically and hormonally based see Scientific Publications .

In the 1980s, Dr. Joseph also published a number of studies on "split-brain" functioning in adults and children, demonstrating, experimentally, the presence of two independent psychological realms (consciousness and an unconscious-awareness), localized side by side in the right and left hemisphere.

In his studies on split-brain adults, Joseph provided compelling evidence that the right and left hemisphere can independently maintain a separate stream of consciousness, and each half of the brain has its own unique likes and dislikes in matters of food, friends, TV-shows, and even clothing. The dual organization of the brain can sometimes give rise to intra-psychic conflict and unconscious emotional turmoil.

In his published studies on split-brain (dual mental) functioning in children, Dr. Joseph demonstrated that young children in some respects function as if the right and left hemisphere are partially disconnected, and that information and memories maintained within the right hemisphere cannot always be completely transferred to the language dominant half of the brain which thus remains "unconscious" of these impulses and knowledge sources including those involving emotional and physical abuse. These well kept secrets of the right hemisphere are yet another source of psychological conflict.

Dr. Joseph is the author of two best selling textbooks (e.g. Neuropsychiatry, Neuropsychology, Clinical Neuroscience), over 60 scientific articles, studies, and chapters on the brain, mind, emotion, and the unconscious, and his work has been twice featured on the cover of the prestigious Journal of Clinical Psychology. In 1992, the prestigious journal, Psychoanalytic Review, published and featured his ground breaking theoretical article: The Limbic System and the Unconscious. Dr. Joseph is also the editor of the highly acclaimed text: NeuroTheology, and the author of several best selling trade books on the brain, mind, emotion, and intra-psychic conflicts (e.g. The Right Brain & the Unconscious).

Dr. Joseph established his private practice in 1983. From 1988 to 1999, Dr. Joseph served on the California Superior Court's Panel of Forensic Experts and was Court appointed to over 500 criminal cases. Dr. Joseph also performed complex psychological evaluations for the California and United States Depts. of Disability, who referred over 1,500 patients to him.

Dr. Joseph has been invited to speak at the University of Geneva, in Japan, at U.C. Berkeley, and other prestigious universities and medical schools, and he has also been interviewed by national and local TV and radio stations, such as FOX-KTVU, NBC-KNTV, ABC-KGO, CBS-KPIX, MSNBC, and Court TV, and his work has been quoted by Time Magazine.

Dr. Joseph is thus a nationally and internationally known expert on the brain, mind and emotional functioning, and has had extensive experience working with a variety of clients and patient populations.
